Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Tyrone Roderick Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Fresno Housing Authority, to the California Finance Housing Agency Board of Directors. For 40 years, the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) has supported the needs of renters and first-time homebuyers by providing financing and programs that create safe, decent, and affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate-income Californians. Established in 1975, CalHFA was chartered as the State’s affordable housing lender to make low-interest rate loans by selling tax-exempt bonds. A self-supporting State agency, bonds are repaid by revenues generated through mortgage loans, not taxpayer dollars.

Tyrone Roderick Williams is a catalyst for positive change and innovation and an industry leader in the affordable housing industry. He has spent the past 25 years successfully leading multi-million dollar, affordable housing initiatives totaling over $1.7 billion.

“I am humbled and honored to serve our state housing finance agency at this pivotal moment. We are facing unprecedented challenges, and the need for affordable housing opportunities has never been greater,” Williams said. “The appointment by Governor Newsom affirms my experience and commitment to preserving and expanding affordable housing options in the Central Valley and across the state. I am elated to support the work and impact of CalFHA,” said Williams.

“Having Central Valley representation at CalHFA is a great win for Fresno. Tyrone’s appointment and active involvement on important housing policies at the state level is a significant step towards creating more equitable housing opportunities for rent-burdened residents throughout Fresno,” said City of Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer.

Williams brings extensive experience in affordable housing, holistic and comprehensive urban revitalization efforts, community development, and much more. His background includes work in the for-profit, nonprofit, philanthropic, and government sectors, with development activities at the forefront of affordable housing efforts in Boston, Houston, Atlanta, Sacramento, and Fresno.

Before joining Fresno Housing, he held executive positions at companies, including the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Integral Development Company. He led initiatives of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Atlanta Development Authority.

He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Prairie View A&M University, a Master of City Planning Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Ph.D. from the “School of Hard Knocks.”

Fresno Housing serves over 50,000 residents from 17 municipalities in Fresno County. Since 2010 the Agency has self-developed over 2,100 new multi-family units and renovated over 650 units. The Agency manages and owns over 80 multi-family housing developments throughout Fresno County. Fresno Housing provides a wide range of affordable housing options, including public housing, workforce housing, farm labor housing, and Housing Choice Vouchers.
